CAST YOUR VOTE

It is time to get out the vote. When an off-year election comes up on November 8th, we will have an opportunity to cast our vote to elect our representatives in local government. Also on the ballot will be Springville’s proposed bond issue of 21 million dollars funded by increased property taxes to build a state-of-the-art recreation facility—as well as an increase in the sales tax to help maintain it.

Can we as citizens really afford all the taxes that are now assessed against our real property let alone having another tax added upon what we already pay? For the purpose of this column, I would like to remain neutral in this debate. We believe that the will of the people by democratic vote is one of our governing principles.

I merely want to encourage you to exercise your right and responsibility to study out the issues and vote for the candidates that will carry out the will of the people. If enough people want the recreation center, it will pass. If enough don’t, it won’t.

If it does pass, the facility might be a local improvement that would possibly bring more residents and businesses to Springville. But we need to be careful about analyzing any increases in taxation. If it does pass, we will all pay higher taxes, whether we benefit from a new recreation center or not. What will increased taxes do to the market value of our homes at this point? How many buyers will be priced out of a home because they can’t afford the extra taxes on their payments? I have not heard one debate on this issue.

The value of our homes and the ability to buy them is based upon the economy, market conditions, taxation, and other criteria. For example, what does an extra $10.00 per month do for the average buyer, looking for a home in the under $250,000 range? For every $10.00 per month increase in taxes, it would mean that a buyer would have to come up with an additional $1800.00 down payment to be able to qualify for the same mortgage payment had the tax not been assessed.

Another way to look at it would be a loss of value in the home you are trying to sell. Others say the needed recreation center will increase the price of homes because of this extra amenity in our community. There are many angles to explore as you make that crucial decision in casting your vote. You owe it to yourself and your community to get off the couch and go to the polls. Until next week keep smiling.
