Did you know your paint choices can alter moods, influence state of mind and even affect physiology? Being aware of the powerful effects of the color of a room can help buyers and sellers make good choices.
Debbie Zimmer, color expert at the Paint Quality Institute in Philadelphia, gives advice in the May issue of REALTOR.
RED: A perfect choice for dining rooms and adult bedrooms, red evokes desire and passion. It creates energy and can actually make the heart beat faster.
ORANGE: Attention-getting orange creates energy and warmth. Muted shades are usable in many rooms and vivid tones are flamboyant.
YELLOW: Happiness and optimism accompany this bright color. Brains release serotonin when surrounded by yellow, creating a positive state of mind.
GREEN: Soothing, popular and versatile, green is a great color choice for bedrooms. It represents renewal, youth, and vigor.
BLUE: Soothing tones of blue can slow pulse rate and lower body temperature, making it another great choice for bedrooms. Vibrant blues can add energy. Zimmer reports that ancient Egyptians, Native Americans and many other people used color to heal.
PURPLE: Purple has proven abilities to stimulate brain activity, but Zimmer recommends people reserve this color for their daughter’s room.
BLACK: Always a good choice for indoor or outdoor accents, it suggests elegance, formality, and sophistication. Too much black can be depressing, so use it frugally.
WHITE: Peace, simplicity, and spaciousness are the traits that white conveys. Another plus to white is that it can create an illusion of the space being bigger that its physical dimensions.
